Cushion-Cut Diamonds: Shape, Sparkle & Settings
Cushion-cut diamonds have softened corners and a shape that can feel classic or contemporary. Some are nearly square; others are distinctly elongated. Facet patterns vary too, so two cushions with the same outline can have very different personalities.
Square or elongated?
A square cushion is compact and balanced. An elongated cushion stretches the silhouette, a good fit if you like the length of an oval but want a slightly more structured shape. There’s no universal ideal length-to-width ratio.
Look at the curve of the corners and sides, symmetry and face-up measurements. Carat weight alone can’t tell you how much diamond you’ll see from above.

How cushion facets affect sparkle
Some cushions show broad, distinct flashes; others show smaller, fragmented reflections often called “crushed ice.” These are informal descriptions of appearance, not quality grades. Elongated cushions can sometimes show darker contrast through the center, but it varies by stone.
Videos help most here. Notice whether the diamond looks lively across its surface and which kind of sparkle you enjoy.
Every diamond we propose comes with an independent grading report, mainly from IGI for lab-grown diamonds and GIA for natural diamonds. The report is the starting point; we still compare the actual stones in video before recommending one.
Settings for cushion-cut rings
A solitaire lets the shape stand out. A diamond band adds sparkle and a hidden halo adds side detail. Colored side stones can make an elongated cushion feel distinctive, while a plain gold band creates quieter contrast. Prongs, setting height and wedding-band fit are part of the design too.

We source both and compare them on appearance and your priorities. See lab-grown vs natural diamonds.
Designing your cushion ring with DMND Ave
Every ring starts with a free 30-minute video consultation, followed by a proposal with a preliminary sketch. After the 50% deposit, Alain sources diamonds for you to review, and you approve the diamond and the detailed 3D design before production. The full step-by-step process is on our custom engagement rings page.
Custom projects typically take 4–6 weeks from the 50% deposit to the finished ring, with insured FedEx shipping afterward. Budgets vary by diamond and design; see what a custom engagement ring costs.
