White Gold vs Platinum & Gold Karats Explained
At DMND Ave we offer 10K, 14K and 18K gold in white, yellow and rose, plus platinum.
What 10K, 14K and 18K gold mean
Karat describes how much pure gold is in the alloy: 10K is about 42% gold, 14K about 58% and 18K 75%. The other metals affect color, hardness and how the gold works. Platinum jewelry is typically 90–95% platinum. A higher karat isn't automatically better, and a lower karat isn't automatically more durable.
White Gold vs Platinum: Which Metal Is Right for Your Ring?
White gold and platinum look similar when a ring is new, but they differ in weight, wear, upkeep and price. Neither is automatically better. What matters is how you want the ring to look and feel over time.
How they look
White gold is gold alloyed with whiter metals, and it's usually rhodium plated for a bright white finish. That plating wears with time and can be redone to restore the color. Platinum is naturally white and doesn't need plating. Over time it develops a soft patina that polishing can refresh.
Weight and everyday wear
Platinum is much denser than gold, so a similar platinum ring feels noticeably heavier. Both metals scratch and wear over time. Platinum often develops a patina as surface metal is displaced, while gold can gradually wear away with use. With either, periodic prong and stone checks are a good habit.
Metal sensitivities
Some white gold alloys contain nickel, while others don't. If you have a known sensitivity, tell us during your consultation so we can discuss the exact alloy. Platinum is often a good option, but the full alloy matters too.
Match the metal to the design
White metals give a cool, bright look around a diamond, while yellow and rose gold add warmth and contrast. Metal also affects how a diamond's color reads; see our guide to the 4Cs. Band width, setting height, prong style and wedding-band fit often matter more than which metal is "strongest."
